Bush Proposes Broadening the No Child Left Behind Act

U.S. Government Study Determines That 1% of the Internet is pornography, but that’s not why I’m writing this!

A CNN piece with that sensational headline discusses the COPA case as it winds it ways back through the court. The really exciting part of the whole article for me though is here:

Closing arguments in the four-week, non-jury trial before Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr. are expected Monday.

Why would I care about that you might ask? Is it because I happen to remember that he was the judge presiding over the original COPA case and struck it down so many years ago and I find it odd that he would be presiding over it again?
Nope.

It's because Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr. is the man who performed our wedding ceremony when my wife and I married some 13+ years ago.

He actually happens to be pretty tech savvy, and made a sound and studied decision the first time around. I suspect he will again in this case.

International poll ranks Bush a threat to world peace

via the International Herald Tribune:
International poll ranks Bush a threat to world peace

TORONTO: A majority of people in three countries with close ties to the U.S. — Britain, Canada and Mexico — consider President George W. Bush a threat to world peace, ranking the U.S. president right up there with the leaders of two countries he has labeled part of the "axis of evil" — North Korea's Kim Jong Il and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"It is striking that these are America's closest allies and the populations are going, 'Whoa, this guy is a danger to the world,'" said Paul Adams, executive director of Ottawa-based EKOS Research which released the poll results Friday.

EFF fighting secret laws

EFF: Breaking News
EFF Asks Supreme Court to Tackle Secret Law

Americans Have the Right to See Laws They Must Follow

Washington, D.C. - The Electronic Frontier Foundation EFF and a coalition of non-profit organizations asked the U.S. Supreme Court Monday to hear a case challenging a secret law governing travelers in American airports.

The case centers on the Transportation Security Agency TSA requirement that travelers show identification before boarding commercial aircraft. So far, the TSA has refused to disclose the terms of the identification requirement to the public, claiming that they are "sensitive security information." In the amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to hear Gilmore v. Gonzales, EFF demonstrates that Congress never intended agencies to have unfettered discretion to impose requirements upon the public without allowing the public to review them.

FSM spotted in germany, with video

Via Table of Malcontents a blog over at wired:

That said, a real-life sighting of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in Germany has me convinced: the FSM is that invisible old man who lives on a cloud.

There's even video.
Comments on the wired blog are priceless as well.

Olbermann: ‘Beginning of the end of America’

'Beginning of the end of America'

Olbermann does it again. I am consistently blown away by the quality of Olbermann's commentary on our current governments policy. He seems to have a true grasp of the damage this administration is doing. I find it hard to believe that more Americans are not outraged... We appear to genuienly be disinterested unless it's some newsworthy sex scandel or a direct imedipment to our current lives. There does not appear to be any concern at all for the errorsion of liberty. Sadly, it seems by the time the public realizes what has happened, it will be too late.

America eats its young

Garrison Keilor over at Salon writes America eats its young which contains this beauty:

I think we must bite the bullet and say no more healthcare for card-carrying Republicans. It just doesn't make sense to invest in longevity for people who don't believe in the future. Let them try faith-based medicine, let them pray for their arteries to be reamed and their hips to be restored, and leave science to the rest of us.

Cutting out healthcare for one-third of the population -- the folks with Bush-Cheney bumper stickers, who still believe the man is doing a heckuva job -- will save enough money to pay off the national debt, not a bad legacy for Republicans.
